As you have now submitted a change of address update to USPS, suggest removing any label internal or external to the mail box prior to turning in the key. Also, consider placing inside or taping inside across the mail box opening a note with your name, the effective date, and the statement 'change of address submitted'. This will stop the postal carrier from delivering mail with your name on the envelope. By removing the box holder name from the mail box, the mail should be handled as not deliverable as addressed, and cause the postal carrier to return the mail to the Post Office where USPS will check their system for an address update for the name on the envelope.

ADD'L
USPS will forward mail from your old address to your new address for six months. You can extend this period another six months (total one year) if you update the information before the end of month six of the original submitted forwarding request. Check the included link for more information; click on the 'Change of Address' tab. One year of forwarding seems to be the maximum.

I am moving out of my dorm tomorrow and I forgot to go to the USPS site to change my address until just now. I was expecting a pretty important letter to come in either on Saturday or Monday but I lose access to my mail key tomorrow. Will they be able to forward it to my new address?
