Why not use a transfer ?

So I want to paint a smallish design on the bottom corner of my epiphone les paul guitar; but I don't want to ruin the finish or anything. I believe you're supposed to sand down the area first so the paint sticks? Wouldn't that ruin the finish or something?

Also, can I use acrylic?
