Yes you ll be safe. Vinyl will dry out and wont be usable after that long anyway. The way you discribe it,it s more of a free lay system and not the glue down type with felt backing..And any asbestos containing vinyl could NOT be sold after 1980 so since your house was built in the mid 80s, your fine..
You should be safe, but ONLY testing will give you a 100% answer. Even in 1990, old linoleum was present in warehouses.
its either cloth back or felt back that all
I am currently renting a condo and in the HVAC closet there is some spare vinyl sheet flooring. One small section of the sheet is folded over and where it is folded, there is a crease and tear in the backing. Is it normal for vinyl backing to fold, crease, and tear?
I have no idea how old the vinyl sheet is except for the fact that the building was constructed in 1986-1987. Additionally, could this backing contain asbestos, and if it does, could this tear release fibers and be a health hazard? The backing is thin, smooth, and white (or slightly off white) with no markings or company name. Furthermore, the front vinyl pattern is simple; white with brown stripes that make 6" x 6" squares. I thought about moving the vinyl sheet, but I don't want to disturb it if it may contain asbestos. What should I do?
