I have just bought an oldish house and some of the pointing on walls is spalling, is this just cosmetic or do I need to get it seen to ?

get it pointed ..damp will come through

Pointing is not the same as the bricks spalling but both need doing to avoid worse problems

read the link ...... on the flip side not having them pointed can cause damp as well
