Ferrets aren't all that bad. If they are approved by your landlord, then it's easy to ferret proof areas using non permanent methods. It's always best to designate a certain room to be the the free roam room if you are worried about your little furballs sneaking into somewhere they should. Bedrooms are often best, as they typically don't contain anything more than a closet.
In a bedroom, all you really have to worry about is
-the bedroom door
-closet (if you have one)
-ac vents (if you have theme)
-cords
For any doors, after shutting the door, shove a couple towels where they are wedged really tightly in the space under neath the door. Make sure every inch is covered, cause they WILL find away if you leave a half inch gap to weasel under.
For any closets, decide if you want them to go in there or not. If so, just leave the door open. If not, wedge towels very tightly. For sliding door closets, just shut the doors and perhaps sit in front of it so you can shoo them away if they try to sneak in there somehow.
For ac vents, just make sure the vent is covered and you should be okay. Make sure you have some toys for them to play with as well.
If you want to give them free roam of the entire apartment, here are some links to help you out

Also, I'd post this is in the pets section rather than the home decorating, since your bound to get more help there. :) I've had ferrets in an apartment before (was watching for a friend), and the rats were harder to watch as they got into spots the ferrets never did. Ferrets really like to play with their people and focus on you when you play with them, making it easier to keep them safe. :)
You are renting an apartment and you want to bring a ferret into it?
Are you kidding?
Does the landlord know? They wont let you.
If you do as soon as the ferret eats its way through the walls you will be out on the street.
Why not just cage off a room with chicken wire. Not easy but not impossible either. I think a 4 x 4 x 4' cage should be adequate.
I know sometimes you can't even paint the walls, so I don't know if fixes to ferret proof a house would be allowed.
