mix 1 third of borax with 2-3 parts of either honey or sugar , place in small containers such as jar lids , put them in areas that cannot be rained on, you will know it works when you find hundreds of dead ants near the mix.
Ants need to live long enough to take bait into their nest which is the source of the ants. Dead ants can not carry bait into the nest. If the ants like protein a protein bait is needed and if they like sugar, a sugar bait is needed. And it takes time for the ants to take the bait down into the nest.
Robert's idea is good, but good housekeeping is also important. Ants won't come by if there's nothing for them to eat.
boric acid powder works best sprinkle it around where you see ants. The ants will carry it back to the hive and it will streilize the coloney.
