I just got a new mattress for 180.00. It is a chicago mattress brand, two-sided, and firm. I got it from a small independent furniture store. I threw out a name brand mattress that was 6 months old which cost me 300.00. It was a cheap piece of junk. Shop wisely.

You can get a fairly comfortable mattress for about $300 BUT it is only going to last you about a year. I have always bought more expensive mattress sets (Simmons Beautyrest, Serta, high quality store brands) and have gotten at least 10 years wear out of them, sometimes longer.
When my grandson needed a bed a couple of years ago (he was 9), I went to Mattress firm and bought him one of their cheaper mattress sets for around $500. A year later the middle was sunk in and you could feel the springs, but the box spring was still ok. I bought a slightly more expensive mattress from another store and again, maybe a year 1/2 later, It was sunk in the middle and you felt the springs (these were non flip mattresses). My next purchase for him was a Simmons Beautyrest set, that cost about $1000. I doubt that he will have to have another mattress set before he is out of high school.
So I spent $800 on two mattresses and one box spring in less than 3 years, but the higher priced set should last him 10 years. I got my current set 8 years ago and it is still as comfortable and supportive as when it was new and I am not thin.
Bottom line - you get what you pay for.
use some pillows
