Gnat is misnomer and generic name applied to essentially
three different families of insects. Some, like black flies or mosquitos
do indeed, "bite", as many folks are familiar with. Perhaps the worlds most
widely known gnat is in reality the house mosquito (Culex pipiens)
Should pin down whom ever told you that, if it involves money.
No one mistakes mosquitoes for gnats!
Most common biters are the midges, no-see-ums, sand flies. See link below from the Univ. FL. and Wikipedia for more info.
Was also told I have gnats along with termites!
