Platform beds come in different designs, with some beds built so the mattress fits down into the frame while others are designed so the mattress sits centered on the wooden surface. Some have headboards attached while other use a wall mounted headboard. Some designs even have storage drawers beneath the platform surface.

Sort of. You have to take into consideration the height of the headboard. If it is a low headboard and you get a 14" pillow top mattress, it may not look good. Then the whole design will look awkward. If you have a high headboard it doesn't really matter, in that case you can put any mattress.
