Carpenter ants mean you have wet wood somewhere in the structure. The only way to get rid of them permanently is to find the wet wood problem and fix it.
I had ants in my living room and heard that cinnamon repels them, so I sprinkled cinnamon along the baseboards, around any cracks, window sills, under the door, and anywhere I thought ants would be coming in...and within a day all the ants were gone and out of my house!
The things I LOVE about this method, no chemicals (with children and animals this is perfect), no nasty smell, cheap (I used dollar store stuff), no exterminators to deal with and trample through your home & it works!
What I don't like..nothing! :)
. Some of the ants can be coming from some old wood or a stump from outside.
Inside: you look for piles of loose material and above it will be an opening for the ants. A usual place for them is in the tubing of a screen or a baseboard or a door.
If you can find their location, they can be taken care of.
