You also might consider building an oversized wooden frame to surround the bed and drape soft yardage to create a be canopy. Another design uses pipes for the created canopy; no curtains but you could add them. With these, you keep the existing bed, just add the canopy box around the frame currently being used.

I want to make my own bed canopy (like in the picture). We don't own my house, though, we rent. So I don't think I'd be allowed to actually use curtain rods and stick them into the wall, as the landlord may not want that. Is there any way I can make a bed canopy without sticking anything into the walls or ceilings (or at least something that you can remove and won't leave giant holes in the walls)? I also want to add some lights in with the fabric. Any websites that can tell me how to make a bed canopy?
