I am sorry for your loss. Well,i don't know how can we preserve it forever. But I advice you not to put in water. Beacause it stays healthy for a day or two and then it's gone. I would advice you to put in your son's diary or any other book. It gets dry but will remain in the same shape and you can have it with you forever.

So sorry for your loss. You can get silica from Michael's craft store for drying flowers. It works pretty well.
