If it's a vacuumed twist lock lid that is hard to turn - Take a bottle opener or even a a fork prong and get the vacuum to escape from inside the jar and it will come right off.
Wear washing up gloves when unscrewing the lid, it gives a better grip.
Basically, you take it in your hand, squeezing it tightly. Then, you twist and turn, and pull . You can use gloves, and even put some vaseline around the rim. :P
