U se a galvenized roofing nail or screw.. Roofing nails you can usually pound right in. Screws you can start by hand too but some like to predrill a pilot hole..
If doing walls use a minimum 1 1/4" when going directly over studs and always put a vapor barrier up also.
If going over drywall I use nothing shorter than 1 3/4".
No glue can be used if going directly over studs ( because of the vapor barrier) but I like to use some construction adhesive when going over dry wall , along with the longer nails..
On the floor is different but you said hanging cement board..
