Painting over laminate cabinets?

for something temporary, clean and degrease the cabinets. Prime with Zinsser BIN primer (that stuff sticks to everything and eliminates the need to sand (rough up) the surface prior to painting). Then use an oil based paint with a high quality brush. Oil based paints dry harder and don't have a tacky feel. I would recommend removing the cabinet doors and painting them in a horizontal position. I have also heard that if you heat up the paint prior to using it, it helps eliminate brush marks, but I have never tried that.

There is a paint you can roll on. I have never had good results with it myself. For a more professional finish they can spray the cabinets as well.

Recently we just bought a new build and unfortunately it was 100% finished when we bought it so we couldn't choose our finishes. So right now we have builder grade laminate cabinets. Our plan is to Reno and put in higher end finishes in two years, however in the meantime I'm looking to do something to give it a bit of style. I want to paint the center island cabinets from white laminate to black. Is this possible? Is there a special paint I can buy?

Thank you for your help!
