However, if it is closer you would get better illumination, but you probably don't want to put too much in one area. It really boils down to what the area the lights are placed in would be used for (example: a storage will easily get away with less light than living/dining room, a reading room or a kitchen).

Hello folks:
I just got an apartment suite, and I am thinking to ask the builder to put some light fixtures in the living room (12' X 11' 3" with a 9' ceiling) while it is still at the pre-drywall stage. It's probably easier to do it now than later.
I have got two options: 1.) a semi-flush mount light fixture in the centre of my living room; 2.) recessed pot lights.
I thought the builder's electricians would know where to position the lights in order to provide a good illumination, but they don't. They want me to tell them exactly where I want the pot lights to be installed. The price they gave me was for four 4-inch pot lights + installation and the electrical stuff. I have done some research on the internet, but it seems like different websites tell you different things. Some say the pot lights can be 7~8 feet apart from each other and some say they can only be 4 feet apart. Could anyone please let me know what to do? Or do you guys think it's a better idea to do a semi-flush mount light in the centre instead of having four 4-inch pot lights?
Thank you in advance!!
