Re-wiring of house - How often? Melbourne Australia?

Your house does not need to be rewired because it is not that old However it is a good idea to do things such as put smoke alarms in the bedrooms as a code upgrade you can also easily run new phone and coax cable lines if you want. Houses that are almost 30 years old or less almost never need to be rewired except for aluminum wiring but even that can be repaired. I would also strongly recommend installing residential fire sprinklers with the floor removed. The fire pump for a residential fire sprinkler system is a smaller size for your residence and easy to afford so is the basic fire alarm panel and the plastic pipe that is approved for residential installations and the sprinkler heads can be the kind where all you see is the cap on the ceiling until the sprinkler activates and no they do not activate all at once. You can get an insurance break in addition to the lifesaving benefits a sprinkler system provides.

There is no fixed time period as to when a house should be rewired it is usually based on a combination of age and condition. You can upgrade an electrical installation without going.

cost of rewiring depends on how much portion of the house needs to rewired. In general it may costs from $152 to $208.

There is no set time regarding this however you would be advised to engage an electrician to inspect and report, however bear in mind he may have a little 'self interest' so query his conclusion..

Rewiring is NOT cheap and if it does need doing it may not involve the whole house or both power and light circuits and possibly the only circuit you may need to pay attention to is for the air conditioner. Led lighting will use less power than conventional lamps.

25 years young? the wiring should not be in that bad of shape then (hopefully)

the whole house should not need to be redone

you will need to call in local electricians to give estimates on the changes you want and to inspect the current condition of the main panel and wiring

Forget it. In the past electrical cables were insulated with rubber which slowly deteriorated to the point where they became unsafe and re-wiring was necessary. Since around 50 years ago all electrical cable has been insulated with plastic which does not break down like rubber and thus it will pretty well last for ever.

Hi,

I have brought a 25 year old 4 bedroom two storey brick townhouse in reasonable condition. I am planning to take up the old carpet and perhaps change the floor boards so see this as an opportunity to re-wire the electrics.

I also want to fit in air con, recessed lighting (preferably LEDs), and perhaps fit in new sockets in various places.

I'd appreciate advice on:

- How often a house actually needs to be rewired

- Estimate of cost of rewiring

Many thanks
