If you are hearing his conversation then he is hearing yours. There is no sound blocker in between the floor above you. I guess the best way to get his attention is hang your radio up close to the ceiling when you are listening to it. It will drown out the noise. It may get his attention and that will give you an opportunity to tell him that you are able to hear his conversation. If that doesn't help wear headphones and listen to your own music. Jo Ann
My upstairs neighbor is my landlord (I live in a basement suite). I can tell which TV show he's watching, hear him talking to the point where I can tell what he's saying, etc. It's beginning to make me extremely on edge. I can't hear people in other parts of my suite, but I can hear him, probably because the ceiling is not insulated or something. I can hear it every time someone moves a chair or takes a footstep, and it's loud and seems to happen a lot until 1-2AM most of the time. It sort of vibrates somehow so I can hear it through earplugs.
I don't really have any right to tell him to stop walking around or moving chairs - it's his house, after all, and people are allowed to walk around.
My question is - would a white noise machine or fan drown the noises out? I have heard that both do wonders, but I wonder if it would cover up louder thudding noises as well as quieter TV sounds. I don't want to go out and buy something that won't help. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this? Which do you think would be better? Other solutions?
