Before you power the stud finder, place it on the wall. Then power it up. That is basically setting up the finder to a normal state. If it doesn't work properly the first time, you may have hit a stud. Power down, move the unit at least six inches and power up again. If it still doesn't work right, maybe the batteries are weak? If none of that works, I have no clue. Try calling the manufacturer. Or, first off, read the directions. If you have no directions you may be able to find them online. I really like mine!!!
