I'm not big on painted brick, they remind me of chiclets. I used tile over my brick there are thousands of colors and patterns, and directions on diy sites, its very not complicated, I particularly like the older tones of greens and rich browns, if you're keeping to the feel of the house you might want to check out what colors were popular and in the right shades for your own look.
