No. It's not your fault. It would have come up not matter how gently you pulled. The builder didn't do sufficient prep work and / or didn't use a suitable sealer before he applied the finish. Perhaps he didn't use any sealer at all.
Our builder redid our hardwood floor. There was some problem with final coating. Some they used blue tape to mark the area. The next day, after coating dries and I removed the tape. To my dismay, the hardwood polyurethane finish comes off under the tape. Could that be some issues with the finish or I may have pulled too strongly? But do not expect finish will come off by removing the marking tapes.
