The reason most summer cover-ups and tops are crocheted is that with today's paltry selection of yarns and threads, it's easier to produce a lighter fabric with crochet than by knitting it. Google "summer weight knit crop top pattern" (without the quotes) for some links. There's not much available. If you have some thift/second-hand stores near by, go and see if they have old knitting magazines and books. There are some cute patterns in the older books from the 1970s and 1980s. You often can't find the same brand yarn that's used in them but you can find the same weight yarn.
