Yes it is okay for prom paired with some nice heels, earrings and nails you should look great :) Im having my prom next week and your dress looks nice :)

What's wrong with going overboard? Honestly think about it. Unless you become a rich and famous celebrity, this will be the one chance you get to wear some over the top elaborate dress besides your wedding, so why not go for it? I can't really think of anything to say about the dress you've shown us as it's not a great picture, and just makes the dress look REALLY weirdly shaped. Try laying it flat on a bed in some brighter lighting maybe, then we can see all of it in detail
it's prom. do what YOU like and wear what you wanna wear. in all honesty, i wish i would've worn a dress shorter than the one i wore. (it was floor length) that is a really pretty dress and wish the right accessories, you'll feel amazing. :) have fun!
