On my 14k gold cross there are little black spots between where the jesus figurines hands are and the actually cross. Im pretty sure the jesus part is silver or white gold and the cross is yellow gold. Its not tarnish, its almost like its some kind of substance such as glue. The cross is old so could it be tarnished silver or something? If you need pictures i can show you. It's probably just dirt. I have the same thing on my silver and yellow gold ring it has dents all over as its design and those dents all have dark dirt in it. Just clean it with a jewellery cleaner.
