I am 5'8 also but a little smaller in the waist., if you don't want a underwear line I would prefer a medium cause I wear a small but I'm just a tad bit smaller than you.

Go by your shirt size

Here's the size chart for VS panties. You would wear a Medium. If you are buying cotton, try a Large. Bras are a whole different, complicated sizing problem.
