Macklemore didn't popularize it, hipsters who don't want to shop at mainstream stores like Charlotte Russe did. Hipster chic came back into fashion a while before the song "Thrift Shop". Basically all fashion trends are just repeats with a new spin on them. The hipster look of the 60's and 70's and grunge/heroin chic looks of the 90's are back now and are all over Pinterest and fashion blogs, magazines, forums, and websites.
It's been around a while, comes and goes in waves. In the 90s grunge wannabe scene, thrift shopping was a way to get the look Before that in the 80s, some did it then too. Like in that movie Pretty in Pink I think. But yeah, it's just fashion cycles
I've always gone to thrift stores or rummage sales, or even trash piles first. It's how I was raised. I am also proudly cheap.
I never heard anywhere it's "cool"...people downtown Toronto don't wear vintage as much as they wear Prada...sadly - it's still all about the brand name.
macklemore for sure
